Gardens & Country Houses
Lower Trengale is an ideal centre for visiting the many historic houses and gardens for which Cornwall is renowned:
Lanhydrock House and Gardens (National Trust). Home of the Agar-Robartes family, Lanhydrock was restored after a fire in 1881 with the best in country house design. Extensive gardens and a network of woodland paths.
Antony House and Gardens (National Trust). 18th Century home of the Carew-Pole family with a fine collection of paintings and furniture. The gardens appear in Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland'.
Cotehele (National Trust). Tudor home of the Edgcumbe family high above the Tamar. The Valley Garden drops down to the river and behind the house is an extensive apple orchard specialising in Cornish varieties. Also visit Cotehele Quay, formerly a thriving port, and Cotehele Mill.
Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park. Magnificent historic house with views across Plymouth Sound. The extensive gardens feature the national Camellia Collection and coastal walks.
Trerice (National Trust). Elizabethan manor house and gardens.
Pencarrow House and Gardens. Georgian home of the Molesworth-St Aubyn family. A fine collection of paintings, porcelain and furniture.
Prideaux Place. Beautiful Elizabethan manor house overlooking Padstow, combining 16th Century architecture and 18th Century Strawberry Hill Gothic.
Caerhays Castle. John Nash designed castle, gardens, home of a national Magnolia Collection, beautiful sandy beaches.
Trengwainton Garden (National Trust). Extensive coastal wooded walks and formal gardens.
Trewithen Gardens. Woodland walks, Rhododendron and Camellia collections, Plant Centre.
The Lost Gardens of Heligan. Restored formal, kitchen and vegetable gardens, Victorian glasshouses, woodland walks.
